The Dell UltraSharp 27 has been the boring correct answer to the question of what monitor to put on a desk for close to a decade, and boring correct answers are underrated. The U2725QE does not reinvent that. It takes the thing people already bought — 27 inches, 4K, IPS Black contrast, factory-calibrated colour, a stand that goes up and down and sideways and rotates — and fixes the two specifications that had started to look dated: the panel now runs at 120Hz instead of 60Hz, and the single-cable connection is now Thunderbolt 4 with up to 140W of power delivery instead of the 90W-class USB-C of the outgoing model.
That second number is the one that quietly matters most. A monitor that delivers 140W can be the only cable going into a 16-inch MacBook Pro. A monitor that delivers 90W cannot — not under sustained load, where the laptop drains slowly while you work and you discover the problem at 4pm. The U2725QE turns "one cable, mostly" into "one cable, actually," and for a lot of desks that alone replaces a separate Thunderbolt dock — which changes the price maths considerably.
Our reservation is about how the spec sheet reads versus how the monitor behaves. VESA DisplayHDR 600 on a panel Dell lists at 450 cd/m² is a peak-highlight certification, not a bright-room HDR experience, and anyone buying this expecting OLED-grade HDR is buying the wrong category of display. And 120Hz on a 5ms office panel with no adaptive sync claimed is a smoothness upgrade, not a gaming one. Both are genuinely good; neither is what the badge on the box implies at a glance.

RTINGS is the closest thing the monitor world has to a laboratory: their conclusions come from an instrumented bench with a published methodology, which is exactly the kind of source a spec sheet cannot replace. If you want measured numbers for contrast, response time and colour accuracy rather than a manufacturer's marketing figure, this is where to get them before you spend $560.
Dell's own listing for the U2725QE is unusually specific, which makes it easy to separate the real upgrades from the refresh-cycle noise. The panel is a 27-inch 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) IPS Black display running at 120Hz, with 99% DCI-P3 coverage factory-calibrated to a Delta E of less than 1.5, 450 cd/m² brightness, a 3000:1 contrast ratio and VESA DisplayHDR 600. Response time is listed at 5ms, viewing angles at 178°, and the surface is matte.
Three of those numbers are the story.
IPS Black and 3000:1. Ordinary IPS panels have historically sat around 1000:1, which is why blacks on an office monitor look like very dark grey in a dim room. IPS Black is the panel technology aimed squarely at that weakness, and 3000:1 is roughly triple the traditional figure while keeping the wide viewing angles and colour consistency that make IPS the right choice for work. It is not VA-panel contrast and it is nowhere near OLED, but on a display used for text, code and photos, tripling black depth without giving up off-axis consistency is the most visible panel improvement of the last few years. One inconsistency worth flagging: Amazon's generic "Contrast Ratio" spec field on this listing still reads 1000:1 while Dell's own product description on the same page says 3000:1. The 3000:1 figure is the manufacturer's stated number for the IPS Black panel; the Amazon field reads like an unfilled default rather than a competing measurement.
120Hz. A work monitor running at double the standard refresh rate is not about frame rates in games. It is about the hundred small motions you make an hour — dragging a window, scrolling a long document, moving a cursor across 27 inches of 4K. At 60Hz those motions render in discrete steps your eye can resolve; at 120Hz they do not. It is a comfort feature and a real one. It is also, honestly, the kind of improvement you notice powerfully for about a week and then absorb into your baseline expectations forever.
140W Thunderbolt 4. Dell specifies the Thunderbolt 4 connection as carrying video, data and up to 140W of power simultaneously, with daisy-chain support for up to two additional 4K monitors. 140W is the current top of the USB Power Delivery specification, and it is what makes the single-cable promise honest for large laptops instead of just thin ones.
It is worth stating plainly: a large share of the people who should buy this monitor should buy it for the ports, not the panel.
The U2725QE carries Thunderbolt 4, HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort, USB-C, USB-A and Ethernet. That is a docking station with a 4K display bolted to the front of it. If your current desk is a laptop plus a dock plus a monitor plus four cables, this collapses to a laptop plus one cable — keyboard, mouse, wired network and external drives all hang off the monitor and connect the instant the Thunderbolt cable goes in.
This is also where the price argument turns. Judged purely as a monitor, $563.53 against 4K60 panels that start around half that is a hard sell. Judged as a monitor plus the Thunderbolt dock you were about to buy — and capable Thunderbolt docks run a few hundred dollars on their own — the gap narrows to the point where the U2725QE can be the cheaper route to the same desk. Whether that maths applies to you is the single most useful question to answer before clicking buy. If you already own a good dock, you are paying full price for a panel upgrade.
Dell also lists ComfortView Plus with an ambient light sensor — hardware-level blue-light reduction rather than a warm-tint software filter, plus automatic brightness matching to the room. On a monitor most people will look at for eight hours a day, an auto-brightness sensor is a small feature with an outsized daily benefit, and it is still surprisingly rare outside Apple's displays.
1. DisplayHDR 600 is not the HDR you are picturing. The certification is real and it is a meaningful step above DisplayHDR 400, which is close to meaningless. But it is measured on short peak highlights, and a panel Dell lists at 450 cd/m² sustained brightness is not going to produce the kind of specular punch people associate with HDR on an OLED television or a mini-LED laptop display. On an edge-lit IPS monitor without local dimming zones, HDR mostly means slightly brighter highlights and a wider colour container. Buy this as an outstanding SDR monitor that also accepts HDR signals and you will be happy. Buy it for HDR movies and you will have spent $563 on the wrong device.
2. 120Hz is not a gaming specification. Dell lists 5ms response time and does not market adaptive sync (FreeSync or G-Sync) on this model. For desktop work that combination is completely fine — 5ms is invisible when you are reading. For competitive gaming it is not what you want, and the absence of variable refresh rate means frame-rate mismatch can produce tearing that a gaming monitor would smooth out. If your monitor has to do both jobs, understand that this one is a work monitor that games acceptably, not a gaming monitor that works.
There is a third thing worth naming that is not a flaw so much as a constraint: 4K at 120Hz is a lot of bandwidth, and carrying it alongside data and 140W of power over one cable is exactly what Thunderbolt 4 exists to do. That is why this monitor wants Thunderbolt or a modern DisplayPort connection to reach its full mode. An older laptop with basic USB-C video output is not automatically going to drive 4K120 over that port — check what your machine's video output actually supports before assuming the headline refresh rate is available to you.
The useful comparisons here are not other brands — they are the cheaper decisions you could make instead, including keeping what you own.

Fair question, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on what you look at. At 27 inches, 4K works out to roughly 163 pixels per inch, which is enough that individual pixels stop being visible in text at normal viewing distance — the thing that makes a good laptop screen look sharp and a cheap desktop monitor look gritty. If you read and write code, prose or spreadsheets all day, that sharpness is the feature you will appreciate most, and it has nothing to do with refresh rates or HDR. If your work is mostly video calls and browser tabs, a good 1440p monitor at half the price will serve you honestly well, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
Buy it if you: work from a laptop that charges over USB-C and want your desk to be exactly one cable; own a 16-inch MacBook Pro or a similarly power-hungry machine that 90W monitors cannot keep topped up; are replacing a monitor and a dock in the same purchase; or spend your day in text and want a sharp, colour-accurate, low-fatigue 27-inch panel in the mainstream price range. The ambient light sensor and ComfortView Plus are genuinely worth something across an eight-hour day, and the height, tilt, swivel and pivot stand means you will not be shopping for a monitor arm unless you want one.
Consider alternatives if: you already own a U2723QE, in which case this is a modest upgrade to a monitor you already like and the money is better spent elsewhere. If you already own a good Thunderbolt dock, the strongest part of this monitor's value argument does not apply to you. If you want real HDR, buy a display with local dimming or an OLED panel and accept the trade-offs those bring for desktop work. And if you game seriously, buy a gaming monitor — the absence of adaptive sync here is a real gap for that use, even at 120Hz.
The $563.53 value calculation: this is an expensive monitor and a reasonably priced monitor-plus-dock. Which of those two sentences applies to you is a question about your desk, not about the product. Work that out first and the purchase decision answers itself — which is, in its own unglamorous way, exactly what you want from a piece of equipment you will use every working day for the next six years.
