The CalDigit TS5 Plus is what happens when a docking-station company stops compromising. Twenty ports. Ten of them USB at 10Gb/s, split across two independent USB controllers so they are not all queueing behind one lane. 10 Gigabit Ethernet built in — not 2.5GbE, not an adapter hanging off the back. DisplayPort 2.1, UHS-II SD and microSD readers, 140W pushed back up the single Thunderbolt 5 cable to your laptop, and a 330W brick to make all of it possible at once. StorageReview's testing reported the 10GbE port delivering full 10-gigabit throughput and consistent performance across the USB ports, and concluded the $499.99 price is defensible once you account for the integrated 10GbE.
Our reservation is not about the hardware. It is about who is standing in front of it. At $499.99 this dock only makes sense if two things are true at the same time: your laptop is a genuine Thunderbolt 5 machine, and you have 10-gigabit networking for the port that justifies the "Plus". Break either condition and you are paying a large premium for capability you cannot reach — and CalDigit's own cheaper models are sitting right there.

Thunderbolt 5 is built on USB4 version 2 and runs at 80Gb/s in both directions simultaneously — double Thunderbolt 4's 40Gb/s. Intel credits PAM-3 signalling for getting there over ordinary passive cables up to a metre long, and the standard also brings DisplayPort 2.1 and PCI Express Gen 4 into the mix. That much is a real, unambiguous generational step.
The 120Gb/s figure that appears in nearly every piece of Thunderbolt 5 marketing is more slippery, and it deserves a plain explanation because a lot of buyers are paying for a misunderstanding. 120Gb/s is Bandwidth Boost: an asymmetric mode that reallocates lanes to push 120Gb/s in one direction while the return path drops to 40Gb/s. It exists to feed demanding display configurations — high refresh rates, multiple high-resolution panels — not to make your external SSD three times faster. StorageReview made exactly this point in their TS5 Plus review, noting the boost applies to display bandwidth at the expense of the other ports. If you read "120Gb/s" and pictured every port getting faster, adjust the expectation now rather than after the box arrives.
CalDigit's published layout for the TS5 Plus is unusually generous, and unusually opinionated about where the bandwidth goes:
Two details are worth pausing on. First, the dual USB controller arrangement: ten 10Gb/s ports sharing a single controller would saturate the moment you moved real data across two of them, so CalDigit splits them across two controllers to keep the ceiling meaningful. This is the kind of engineering decision that never shows up on a spec-comparison chart and is felt every day by anyone running several drives and an audio interface at once.
Second, an oddity worth catching before you order. The TS5 Plus has two downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports, while the cheaper standard TS5 has three. If your workflow is built around chaining multiple Thunderbolt devices rather than around USB breadth, the more expensive dock is the more limited one. That is a genuinely strange product decision, and it is the sort of thing a spec-sheet skim will not catch.
Strip the two docks down and the $100 gap between the TS5 and the TS5 Plus mostly buys one thing: 10 Gigabit Ethernet instead of 2.5GbE, plus five extra ports and a bigger power supply. StorageReview reported the port hitting full 10-gigabit performance, so the implementation is not the question. The question is whether you have anything on the other end of the cable.
A 10GbE port is transformative if you edit off network-attached storage, move multi-gigabyte project files across an office LAN, or run a home lab with a 10-gigabit switch. It is completely inert if your desk terminates in a consumer router with gigabit LAN ports — which describes the overwhelming majority of home offices. There is no partial credit here: the port either has 10-gigabit infrastructure behind it or it runs at whatever your network can do, in which case you paid $100 for a number on a box. Be honest with yourself about which one you are, because this single question decides whether the "Plus" is worth anything to you at all.
This is the single most important paragraph in this review. Thunderbolt 5 hosts are still uncommon. On the Mac side, Thunderbolt 5 arrived with the M4 Pro and M4 Max class of machine — the higher-tier MacBook Pro configurations and the M4 Pro Mac mini — and continues in their successors. Base-chip machines did not get it: an M4 MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air line ship with Thunderbolt 4. CalDigit's own compatibility notes for the TS5 Plus are written in terms of what M5 Pro and M5 Max machines can drive, which tells you exactly which tier of laptop this dock was designed around.
Plug a TS5 Plus into a Thunderbolt 4 laptop and it works — it simply negotiates down to 40Gb/s. Everything still functions, the charging still charges, the ports still port. But you have bought a $499.99 dock to get Thunderbolt 4 performance, and the CalDigit TS4 delivers that for roughly half the money with two more downstream Thunderbolt ports. Check your laptop's actual port specification before anything else. If it says Thunderbolt 4, this review has already answered your question.

Buy it if you: run an M4 Pro / M4 Max-class Mac or an equivalent Thunderbolt 5 Windows laptop as your only machine, work off networked storage that can actually saturate 10 Gigabit Ethernet, and connect enough simultaneous peripherals that the dual-USB-controller design stops being a spec-sheet line and starts being the reason your audio interface does not glitch while a backup runs. Video editors and photographers pulling UHS-II cards, engineers with 10-gigabit home labs, and anyone whose desk currently holds three separate adapters are the honest target market.
Consider alternatives if: your laptop is Thunderbolt 4 — get the TS4. Your network tops out at gigabit — get the standard TS5 and keep the $100. You chain several Thunderbolt devices — the standard TS5's third downstream port matters more to you than the Plus's extra USB. Or you dock a laptop occasionally and mainly want a display output, a card reader and a couple of USB-A ports — the Anker 7-in-1 hub costs under €40 and will not make you feel foolish.
The $499.99 value calculation: this is monitor money spent on a box that moves data. It is worth it in exactly one configuration — Thunderbolt 5 host, 10-gigabit network, many simultaneous peripherals — and in that configuration it genuinely replaces a dock, a network adapter, a card reader and a charger while collapsing your desk down to one cable. Outside it, the TS5 Plus is a very good product being asked to solve a problem you do not have.
