Active noise cancellation is where these two earbuds diverge most dramatically. Sony's WF-1000XM5 uses the QN2e HD Noise Cancelling Processor paired with a V1 integrated processor and eight microphones across both buds. The result is class-leading low-frequency attenuation — plane engines, train rumble, and HVAC hum are reduced to near-silence. In independent testing, the XM5 achieves roughly 30–35 dB of noise reduction in the 100–400 Hz range where most ambient sound energy lives.
The AirPods Pro 2's H2 chip processes audio two times faster than the original H1, enabling what Apple calls 'computational audio' — 48,000 real-time adjustments per second to both ANC and Transparency mode. In absolute noise reduction terms the H2 is slightly behind Sony's QN2e, but Apple's Adaptive Transparency mode is genuinely transformative: it reduces loud sounds above 85 dB (a passing bus, a jackhammer) in real time while still letting ambient sound through naturally. This is a feature Sony does not match.
Sony tunes the WF-1000XM5 toward a slightly warm, musical signature with elevated mid-bass and smooth treble rolloff. The 8.4mm dynamic driver with a carbon-fibre composite diaphragm delivers excellent detail retrieval and a wide soundstage for an IEM. The LDAC codec (Android only) enables up to 990kbps Bluetooth audio — technically near-lossless and a clear win if you use a high-bitrate streaming service.
AirPods Pro 2 are tuned to a more neutral target with a slight upper-midrange lift that flatters vocals and guitars. The custom Apple driver and amplifier chip produce a fast, clean sound for a sealed IEM. Personalised Spatial Audio with head tracking is the headline differentiator: in supported apps (Apple Music, Apple TV+, Netflix) the soundstage expands and anchors to the room rather than your head. For casual streaming — podcasts, Spotify, YouTube — the raw audio quality gap is marginal; both are excellent.
Sony redesigned the WF-1000XM5 to be 25% smaller than the XM4, but the oval housing still protrudes from the ear more than the AirPods Pro 2. Three ear tip sizes are included (S/M/L silicone, M memory foam). The IPX4 rating covers sweat and light rain — fine for commuting but not swimming.
AirPods Pro 2 use Apple's signature short-stem design with an inward-pointing acoustic vent, keeping the bud flush with the ear canal entrance. Android users get LDAC for near-lossless audio.
AirPods Pro 2 are engineered for Apple first. One-tap pairing across iCloud devices, automatic ear detection, Siri hands-free, Find My network integration, and audio handoff between iPhone/iPad/Mac/Apple Watch are exclusive. Personalised Spatial Audio calibration (using the TrueDepth camera to map your ear geometry) has no Sony equivalent.
