For a decade, every external capture card asked you to make the same quiet trade: the box sat between your console and your screen, and whatever it could not pass through, you did not get to see. High refresh rate, variable refresh rate, HDR — the card ate one or more of them, and the person actually playing the game paid for the recording. The Elgato 4K X is the first USB card that credibly ends that trade. HDMI 2.1 on both the input and the output, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection to the computer, capture and passthrough up to 4K144, HDR10, and VRR passthrough so the picture on your own display keeps its adaptive sync. That is a genuinely new capability class in a $249.99 box you can put in a backpack.
Our reservation is not about the hardware — it is about the match between the hardware and the buyer. Almost nobody publishes at 4K144. Twitch tops out at 1080p60 for the overwhelming majority of channels, and even the YouTube gameplay uploads that matter are 4K60 at best. Elgato's own 4K S captures 4K60 HDR for $159.99. If you buy the 4K X and your console, your monitor or your USB port cannot feed it above 4K60, you have spent $90 on a headline number you will never see. Buy this card for the passthrough, not for the recording.

EposVox has covered capture hardware longer and more sceptically than almost anyone on YouTube, and this review puts the 4K X next to its internal sibling the 4K Pro. Worth watching precisely because the title is not a compliment — the generation is good, and it is also messier than the marketing suggests.
The specification that matters is HDMI 2.1 on both ports. Earlier external cards ran HDMI 2.0 passthrough, which caps out around 4K60 — so a PS5 or a Series X running a 120 Hz mode had to drop to 60 Hz the moment you put a capture card in the chain. You could work around it with an HDMI splitter and a second cable run, which is exactly as annoying as it sounds. The 4K X removes the workaround: Elgato specifies passthrough and capture up to 4K144, with 1080p240 available at the low-resolution end for high-refresh competitive play.
The second change is the host connection. USB capture has historically been bandwidth-starved, which is why serious 4K capture meant a PCIe card inside a desktop. A USB 3.2 Gen 2 link (10 Gbps) is what makes a card this capable external at all — and it is why Elgato's own internal 4K Pro, at $299.99, is no longer the obvious choice for anyone who does not already have a spare PCIe slot and a tower to put it in. An external card you can unplug and take to a LAN event, a client shoot or a friend's console is a materially different product.
The third is VRR passthrough. Variable refresh rate is the feature that stops screen tearing by letting the display refresh in step with the console's actual frame output, and it is the first thing most capture chains break. Passing it through untouched means the card genuinely gets out of the way of the person playing, which was the entire complaint about capture cards for years.
Elgato is not hiding either of these, but both live in small print and both can silently cost you the feature you paid for.
1. The 4K144 headline becomes 4K120 on DSC displays. Elgato's own footnote states that passthrough is limited to 4K120 on screens using Display Stream Compression (DSC). DSC is not exotic — it is how a large share of current high-refresh 4K monitors reach their top modes over a single cable. So "4K144" is conditional on the specific display sitting at the end of your chain, and if yours uses DSC, the difference between this card and a hypothetical 4K120 card is zero.
2. USB 3.2 Gen 1 reduces your capture resolution. Elgato states plainly that Gen 1 works with reduced resolution. Plenty of laptops, and very nearly every cheap USB hub and dock, are Gen 1 (5 Gbps) even when the port is USB-C shaped and coloured like a fast one. If you plan to capture into a laptop, confirm the port generation in the manufacturer's spec sheet before you buy — not from the connector shape, which tells you nothing.
There is a third, softer constraint worth naming: the host machine. Elgato's stated Windows requirement is roughly a 6th-generation Intel Core i5 or an AMD Ryzen 5 with a GTX 10-series class GPU or better. That is not a high bar for a modern gaming PC and it is a real bar for the eight-year-old laptop somebody was planning to press into service as a capture box. On the Apple side it is macOS 11 or later, and — unusually for capture hardware — iPadOS 17 or later, which makes an iPad a legitimate portable capture target.
Cheap capture dongles are cheap partly because they ship you a driver and wish you luck. Elgato's capture software is free, and the parts that matter are the parts that are usually paywalled elsewhere: no watermarks, no recording time limits, your microphone recorded as a separate audio track so you can mute or rebalance commentary afterwards, and AAF export of split video and audio tracks into Premiere or Vegas. Flashback Recording — a rolling cache you can scrub backwards into and save after the fact — is the feature that has quietly justified Elgato hardware for a decade, because the clip you want is almost always the one you were not recording.
On the live side the card presents as a plain video source to OBS, Streamlabs Desktop, Twitch Studio, vMix and Meld Studio, and to conferencing apps including Zoom and Teams. There is no proprietary lock-in on the streaming path, which is the right call and not a given in this category.
The most useful comparison for this card is not against a rival brand — it is against Elgato's own range, because that is where the real decision sits. Five products, five different buyers.

You can buy an HDMI-to-USB capture dongle on Amazon for under $30, and thousands of people do. It is worth being honest about what those actually are: 1080p60 maximum, no passthrough at all, and a variable-quality chipset behind an unbranded shell. If you are capturing a static source you do not need to watch live — a camera feed for a recorded podcast, a laptop screen for a tutorial — a cheap dongle is a perfectly rational buy and the 4K X is overkill by a factor of eight. The moment you need to play on your own screen while capturing, the dongles are out of the conversation entirely, because passthrough is the thing they do not do.
Buy it if you: play on a PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X or a high-refresh gaming PC at 4K120 or above with VRR enabled, and you want to record or stream without your own picture getting worse. That is the specific scenario this card was built for and it is the only one where the $90 premium over the 4K S is money well spent. It is also a strong pick if you capture in more than one place — the external form factor plus iPad support makes it genuinely portable in a way a PCIe card never will be.
Consider alternatives if: your console or display tops out at 4K60, in which case the 4K S at $159.99 does everything you will actually use for $90 less. If you stream at 1080p and always will, the HD60 X at $179.99 is still the cheaper honest answer. If you have a desktop tower and want the card to disappear inside it forever, the internal 4K Pro is the same idea in a different socket. And if what you actually want is a good camera as a webcam for calls and talking-head video, buy the Cam Link 4K at $99.99 and put the other $150 toward lighting, which will improve your video far more than capture bandwidth ever will.
The $249.99 value calculation: this is a card that is worth its price to a minority of the people who will buy it, and worth about $160 to everyone else. The hardware deserves its scores; the purchase deserves a check of three things first — your console's output mode, your monitor's DSC status, and your computer's USB port generation. Get all three right and the 4K X is the best external capture card on the market. Get any one of them wrong and you have bought a very good 4K60 card at a 4K144 price.
