The well-documented caveat: earlier SanDisk Extreme / Extreme Pro units had a firmware-related reliability episode. Here's the one thing that separates a good editing drive from a frustrating one. Every consumer SSD has a small, very fast SLC cache. Box speeds (and most YouTube "transfer a single file" tests) measure the burst into that cache. But editing workloads — offloading a full shoot, rendering a 40-minute export, caching a long timeline — fill the cache and push the drive into its sustained speed, which can be a fraction of the headline number on cheaper drives.
This is why two drives with the same "1,050 MB/s" box spec can feel completely different in an edit: one holds ~900 MB/s through a 200 GB offload, the other collapses to 400 MB/s after 30 seconds. Do I need USB4 / Thunderbolt for editing 4K off a portable SSD? No, not for standard 4K. A good USB 3.2 Gen 2 drive (~1,000 MB/s) plays back and scrubs multi-stream 4K H.264/HEVC and even ProRes 422 on a modern machine without dropping frames. You only need USB4/Thunderbolt (3,000+ MB/s) for 8K, heavy multicam ProRes, or RAW. And a USB4 drive is only that fast if your laptop has a USB4/Thunderbolt port — on plain USB-C it falls back to ~1,000 MB/s.
Read speed vs write speed vs sustained speed — which matters for editing? Sustained write speed matters most, and it's the number manufacturers hide. Box specs quote peak speeds the drive hits for a few seconds into its SLC cache, then it falls off once that cache fills. When you offload a 200 GB shoot or render a long export, you live in the sustained zone. Will a portable SSD throttle and drop frames when it gets hot? Cheap or caseless drives can. Under a sustained write the controller heats up and throttles to protect itself, which in an edit shows up as dropped frames or stutter. Is it safe to keep my only copy of footage on a portable SSD? Never keep a single copy of anything you can't re-shoot.
